$400,000 in scholarships committed to FAMU and B-CC

Walt Disney World (WDW) announced today that it will once serve as the title sponsor of the 2006 Florida Classic football battle between FAMU and B-CC.

"We're delighted to be the title sponsor of the Walt Disney World Florida Classic again, and look forward to providing $400,000 in scholarships to students during this hallmark event," explained WDW Director of Minority Business Development Eugene Campbell.

This year's game is set for Saturday, November 18, at 3:30 p.m. in the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla. This will mark WDW's ninth year as the games title sponsor and bring their total financial investment to the game to $2.3 million in scholarships to both educational institutions.

Of note...
By calling the game sponsorship a scholarship contribution, WDW cleverly moves a business sponsorship/marketing deal and firmly places it into the charitable contribution column for which they are surely to take a tax write off.

The Walt Disney World Florida Classic is expected to draw a sell-out crowd of more than 72,000 fans and will be televised before a national audience on ESPN U (owned by Disney) . This game is considered the largest Historic Black Colleges & University (HBCU) football classic in the country.

  2. HBCU Classic negotiations must be something like guys that continually get raped in prison. You hate it at first and know it's wrong, but I guess you eventually start liking it and asking for more.

$2.3 million dollars in scholarships in 9 years to SPLIT. That's an average of $128K a year coming into FAMU's scholarship fund. The FACULTY RAISED THAT MUCH MONEY IN A FEW DAYS for scholarships just last week. Surely we can up the ante next year.

  3. LOL!

What happened to all of this big talking Castell was doing?

  4. We must admit that 400k in scholarships has to be much more than in years past...because if we were doing 400k a year we would be at almost four million now.

  5. I doubt that. WDW gave that much in scholarships to specialized scholarship programs in one year that I know of, so let's not get the facts crooked.

If this is all we can expect in sponsorship dollars, then we need to start withdrawing from our 401K plans before the bill collectors start knocking down the doors.

BTW, how does this factor into this $8M Townsend projected and have we finally paid down that almost $4M deficit in athletics? If not, there's a strong possibility that that deficit will increase this year.

Someone needs to check ole boy's track records (Townsend). Especially up in NY.

It probably DOESN'T! Because it's listed as "scholarships", very little (if any) will likely be earmarked for athletics.

This "deficit" you speak of will only be allleviated once WE "WTFU", and start supporting the Homefront ... And quit wasting all these MILLIONS of dollars in loot in a city and facility that has been playing us like fools since we've been over there!

We've been had ... Every year since we've been over there!

FTR - Is this $400K for just THIS year ... Or for some length of time - Like for the next 2-4 years?

Either way ... It's STILL "Chump Change" in relation to the MILLIONS of dollars that you all are pumping into that city annually, and for palying in a facility that's so rickety that even its primary tenant is smart enough to GTF outta there and build their own facility on campus!!

OK - So Mickey is giving you $400K ... To once again essentially keep you all the hell away from their hotels, and disrupting any of their REAL paying customers ...

So - What is the City and County NOW going to be doing for you?

  7. So this donation goes strictly to scholarships? And not to the athletic department? Is Nelson Townsend happy with that? Doesn't he need money for the athletic department.

  8. All the more reason why we need to fill up Bragg. Let's take of home first.

  9. Of course athletics needs money. Is your name on the list as a donor or booster?
