J-School Faculty Member takes Top Honors at Conference
Yanela Gordon, assistant professor in the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication, presented a refereed paper at the Annual Convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication last week in San Francisco. Gordon's paper, titled "The Historical Mission and Evolution of the Capital Outlook Newspaper," was named the top faculty paper in community journalism.

FAMU to compete for additional State Dollars
This past spring the Florida Legislature set aside a $30 million dollars to fund, above normal state appropriations, innovative ideas at state universities which could have lasting benefit to the state and society.

One of the ideas FAMU plans to offer is its centers for plasma science and technology, carbon-based nano-tubes to deliver medicines to targeted parts of the body and addressing health disparities in minority population. If choosen, the state will create designate the choosen program a "Center of Excellence" in the SUS.

FAMU to participate in Doris Duke Fellowship Program
FAMU is one eight universities selected to participate in the Doris Duke Conservation Fellows Program. The program, which was launched in 1997 by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, is the nation’s premier leadership development program for future conservation leaders pursuing master’s degrees in multidisciplinary environmental studies programs.

The highly selective program will support a total of 36 students enrolled at participating schools. Each fellowship provides up to $30,000 for tuition and a paid summer internship, as well as support for leadership development. FAMU joins Yale, Duke, Cornell, Northern Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, and California at Santa Barbara as the eight universities selected to participate in the program. These schools were selected from a group of 28 invited to compete for the opportunity to participate.
