Engineering: Bursting at the seams!

Officials at the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering says the school is so overcrowded that they's had the use the entrance to the building as a study hall.

Overcrowding has caused the College to call into service some 19 trailers which are being used for office and classroom space. The lack of space has forced the college to offer some needed classes less frequently. The COE has been pushing for $22-million expansion to accomodate the college's growing student enrollment and grow research. If the additional space isn't provided the college's research capacity will have to be reduced.

FAMU Enrollment at the COE declining
Three-fourths of the COE's students are from FSU, the rest from FAMU. Since 2004, the number of FAMU' students in the joint Engineering school has fallen from 605 to 469 students this fall.

By the numbers
Students: 2,200

Faculty: 90

Research: $80 million in grants

  1. as of 8 years ago, I think the COE was 2/3 FSU, 1/3 FAMU, which was also the enrollment ratio of each univ in general.

  2. FAMU's enrollment was higher than FSU under Humphries. Number of AA professors was hire. Under current administration, AA faculty roles have greatly declined. These were the folks who helped Humphries recruit AA students. Administrative policies are what kept them there. Over the past two years, students have been grossly neglected and there has been a shift of FAMU students to FSU through poor recruitment efforts and students transferring due to poor administrative policies.

From my sources, a lot of the overcrowding is staged so that they can get their third building.

I wouldn't allow for it until they make a commitment to hiring AA faculty, recruiting AA students and putting into place an AA faculty and student maintenance policy.
