A Tallahasseee Democrat reporter urges FAMU to be more open in public communications. The reporter wrote, "FAMU so steadfastly runs from the press that covering a critical story involving the university is among the most dreaded assignments in Florida journalism."
FAMU's administrators routinely fail to return phone calls or make themselves available for comment. Its vice presidents, deans and even police chief refer questions to a communications department that often takes days to return calls.
We at Rattler Nation have experienced the same kind of stonewalling.

Exactly why would a state institution have to be "urged" to be open. Florida has SUNSHINE LAWS that applies to FAMU. Further, the fact that FAMU drops the ball on properly communicating information within and outside the FAMU community only hurts the institution because all the bad news (true or false) gets out and all the good achievements of students barely gets the recognition deserved.
ReplyDeleteWho cares about the Tallahassee Democrat anyway. They're usually trying to find and report the negatives about FAMU anyway.
ReplyDeleteIf FAMU doesn't want the "bad" stuff covered, we shouldn't call the media to report the good stuff either. Seems only fair.
ReplyDelete8:03---the TD isn't "trying to find and report the negatives about FAMU." The negatives are already there. I'm no great defender of the Tallahassee Democrat, but I venture to say that they report what's there. We shouldn't want positive coverage from them if, when negative things are happening, we don't expect them to report on the bad things as well. What newspaper is going to report on only the good stuff? Be real. And whether or not anyone "cares" about the Democrat is beside the point.
