FAMU’s Class of 2030 arrives with high marks and high expectations

FAMU welcomed more than 1,900 freshmen and transfer students Sunday as it formally introduced its Class of 2030, one of the university’s largest incoming classes in more than a decade.

The freshman pinning ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for a class with a strong academic profile. Incoming freshmen posted an average core high school GPA of 3.9, an average SAT score of 1,150 and an average ACT score of 23. More than half arrived with college credits already completed.

The class also represents a broad geographic reach, with students from 49 states and 57 of Florida’s 67 counties.

FAMU President Marva B. Johnson, J.D., said this class gives her optimism about the university’s future.  "This class gives me great hope that our greatest years are truly ahead of us,” Johnson told the students.

“Many of you had other options, and many of you were admitted to several selective universities in this country, schools that turned away thousands, but you chose FAMU,” Johnson said. “And we are grateful that you are here.”

Johnson committed to the student, that the university will be there to support them in the their academic endeavors to ensure that that graduate on time.

“We are going to give you all of the support you need to make sure you finish your degree programs in four years or less,” she said.

The class arrives as FAMU continues to strengthen its academic profile and national standing.  

For the students receiving their pins Sunday, the ceremony was a formal welcome to FAMU, and the first step toward becoming members of the FAMUly.
