Howard Johnson, who has served as UNT's Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs since 2003, will assume a UNT System-level position effective February 1, 2007.

Johnson, who had advised UNT President Gretchen M. Bataille of his plans to seek a higher education presidency and is a finalist in a presidential search, confirmed in a memorandum to colleagues that he has been in discussions with the Chancellor and President about transitioning the Office of the Provost to new leadership.

In the memorandum, emailed today, Johnson says, "UNT now stands at a critical point in its development -- one that will demand a long-term commitment from its academic leadership to achieve its strategic goals. At the same time, I stand at a threshold in my own career, where it is important to seek new experiences and perspectives that I can bring to a future presidency."

Gary S. Krahenbuhl, formerly Senior Vice President at Arizona State University, to serve as UNT's interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs while the University conducts a national search to fill the position. Krahenbuhl will begin work at UNT on February 1, 2007.

  1. Did he willingly take this job or was he pushed out as Provost?

  3. Well, so much for our prestigious search firms recommendations.

We have at least one candidate qualified to lead FAMU.

Stevie Wonder could see that Johnson wasn't the one.

  4. They are not picking Ammons... Thompson, qualified or not will be hired. The search is a joke.

  5. I'm not sure that this correspondence means Johnson is not qualified. UNT got a new president in 2006. It is customary for new presidents to bring in their own staff. I believe Dr. Johnson recognizes this and is moving out so she can hire who she wants and he can move on with his career.

Isn't this what we all expect at FAMU? That the current VPs will all be moved out when a new president comes on board. I am not convinced that this is a single of something bad.
