Castell's budget smoke & mirrors

Our researchers at RN have been going through the FAMU budgets as presented at the Febuary 23, 2007, budget committee meeting (see above). Click on each picture to enlarge.

Bill Tucker, former FAMU UFF President, suggests that the third and fourth quarter projections were concealed from the committee and the members were probably unprepared to to understand or question the accuracy or origins of some the figures.

During the Feburary 23 meeting Pam Duncan and Mary Dialo raised the question of the hidden files. After some work, Dialo was able to open the file and discovered the glaring $22 million budject projection for the 4th quarter (Summer 2007).

While FAMU CFO Grace Ali was presenting a rosey financial picture of the university's finances, her final projects for the 2nd half of the year depended on the first half (actual) E&G and the hidden 3rd and 4th quarter projections.

The budget committee made up of Regina Benjamin, Al Cardinas, and Leery Jenkins were prepared to accept whatever Castell was telling them on faith.

When Dialo raised questions about the budget she was admonished, because she was not a member of the committee, and tolk to ask her questions privately.

  2. I tried to follow the flow chart as much as I could, but this is a bit much. I need a break down of the chart and figures as well. I did, however see and understand that 22 million $$ deficit column and tried to understand that. Somebody, please, help a sister out on the chart.

  3. Looks like payroll is way too high. Those teachers and administrators need to get to work or be fired! Can't leave off Daddy FAMU forever.

  4. Besides the fact that the administration has tried to conceal the true state of affairs, there are several other problems. Why, for instance, has no money has been spent on scholarships? Do you think this might have something to do with the tragic drop in enrollment, SATs, ACTs, and GPAs? And why did they only spend about 1/5 of the maintenance budget in the first 1/2 of the year? Could it be that they wanted to load all those costs up in the last quarter, so they wouldn't be discovered and discussed until Castell and Co. were gone? And what's with them overspending the consultant budget by $5.6-million? I sure don't remember any Trustees discussing, let alone approving this!

Sounds like our great "Ms. Fixit" planned to spend everything she could right at the end, leaving Dr. Ammons a huge financial mess. Interesting how quiet Godblesscastell has been lately. Hard to talk with a mouthful of crow, huh?

  5. Ammons should not start until after the Fiscal year so he can be PROTECTED from this foolish temp administration.

  6. Ammons is so gung-ho about getting back to FAMU until he probably han't REALLY thought about what he's coming to. It's going to be a plumb mess when he steps into the presidency. Whatever he does and/or however he steps will be an improvement over the likes of Castell Bryant. I hope he brings his own university legal counsel wih him so that l' cussing Lizzie Mac can ease on down, ease on down the road. And I hope she don't carry nothing but the memories of her horrendous performance as the university's legal counsel .while on the payroll. Quite frankly, I don't know she and Cassie and Debra "Man-looking" Atinsleep at night, what with al lthe maness and mayhem they've caused since their affiliation with Castell.
