The FAMU Marching 100 will play at a Barack Obama for President Rally Sunday in Tampa.

The Illinois Senator who is raising money for his presidential campaign, made a stop in recently..

According to the Tampa Bay Area O-Train committee, Sunday's fundraising event is is “designed to attract a new generation of donor.” And, the main reason the FAMU Band was selected was their immense "notoriety."

Forty-five members of the Marching 100 will make the trip.

If you go:
Who: Tampa Bay Area O-Train with speaker Sen. Barack Obama
When: 12:45 p.m. Sunday
Where: Cuban Club, 2010 Republica De Cuba in Ybor City

  1. The 100 has really been getting some very good coverage for FAMU.

Their SuperBowl performance is still reverberating with me!! Their performance with Kanye and Jamie Foxx was riveting (even though Dr. White couldn't go. What a shame).

Despite the little hotel debacle, these STUDENTS are the ones who are getting the school much-needed positive coverage in these turbulent times.

Thanks Dr. White and all of your leaders and the talented members of the band for presenting this great university in such a wonderful light.

Obama is going to see what Clinton and the French saw--- that FAMU is an electrifying place.

  4. Hubba 100. Seems like the band has is in some kind of a Golden Era, where you cannot pass through Florida without getting the 100 to perform for you. The Bowl, the Grammy's, and now Obama's fundraiser.

You know Wrestlemania 24 is going to be in the Citrus Bowl a year from now. Maybe they should get the 100 to do something there.

  5. Does this constitute an endorsement by FAMU for Obama for President?

    I think it does.

    Is this appropriate?

Who is paying for this? Obama's campaign, FAMU, the band, or FL tax payers?

  7. There goes Julian pimping the 100 again. First the Super Bowl where the Band got a shameful $3,000 to show. Now to play for Obama for free. When Barak was here two weeks ago he couldn't even drive through campus on his way back to the airport despite being asked to do so by several FAMU and community luminaries.

Now his campaign wants the band to play for free. YES THAT IS AN ENDORSEMENT AND NO IT'S NOT PROPER. I like Obama, but there is absolutly no upside for the school. Only potential exposure to bad press for an unauthorized endorsement.

By the way, somebody at the Nation should look the meaning of "notoriety" and try to find The correct word next time.

  8. to anon @ 11:26..

    1. quit hatin
    2. it's not pimpin...there presence was requested (as usual)
    3. the 100 has played for and will continue to play for political functions (the clintons, the bushes, cheney, etc.)
    4. Dr. White works his tail off trying to promote and get exposure for the band and the university. this is not a for-profit entity and everything they do does not have to make a ton of money. sometimes the opportunities to be a part of events is the payment (of course, their expenses should be paid).
    5. the exposure is free GOOD publicity for the universtiy (which FAMU really needs really needs right now), which does not cost them ANYTHING. do have any idea what advertising costs? if anything this saves FAMU money on recruitment.

    instead of hatin'

maybe you could respond intelligently about the appropriateness of tax payers money being used to support a single candidate

  12. To idiot @ 4:52:

Funds used to pay expenses for the band to appear ANYWHERE are paid by the requester/host.

It's no wonder why you people have no clout in the Fl legislature. Dumber than a box of rocks.

More like a box of trixs. LOL

These folks need to kick their JUCO prez to the curve. He's tired, dated and out of touch with higher ed.

Just because he delivered the wrap-a-round stadium; they didn't have to make him president; they could have rewarded him by naming a press board/stadium bedroom after him instead.

    Big mistake!
