Skylar Byrd is only 17 but she already knows what it's like to be courted by the big guys.
Her top grades and perfect 1600 score on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) turned the heads of university recruiters her way, including Harvard and Florida A & M University, the two top destinations of National Achievement Scholars.
Byrd's long-time aim has been to go to Harvard, which has historically been the top destination for National Achievement Scholars. But FAMU -- which this year edged out Harvard for the second time as the top recruiter of those scholars -- hasn't given up on trying to recruit her.
FAMU competed for top students
articles a touch out of date. Skylar eventually chose Harvard. Met her before, she's cool people.
ReplyDeleteThat's why it says "retrospective", which means looking back!
ReplyDeleteThis is still a good read, about how we used to be a beast! Hopefully Ammons will rebuild our once fierce recruiting program and make us a contender again.
James Ammons has the entire FAMU Nation on his shoulders. Sure hope my man can deliver. It'll take several years for him to dig us out of this morass created by Castell.
ReplyDeleteAhhhhhh, the good old days. When FAMU was flying high and on top of everything. Long before Gainous and Castell brought us in for a crash landing!
ReplyDeleteI think that FAMU has all the tools it needs to be competitive amongst National Achievement Scholars again. The last two administrations chose not to make recruiting a priority. I'd like to think that the newest admistration will make this one of the areas to light a fire under.
ReplyDeletetrue dat on "retrospective". FAMU and Harvard duking it out over the absolute best, and FAMU winning more times than not.
ReplyDeleteJay-z put it best: went from Top 10 to not mentioned at all.
We can do it again if we put our minds to it. Unfortunately, it will be painful because lots of folks have gotten out of the habit of doing their jobs. If you are not helping FAMU, you have got to go. FAMU should not be a place where folks collect a paycheck. NO WAY. We cannot afford it in the age of budget cuts. I predict that Ammons will become quickly unpopular if he does the right thing: Holding people accountable. If you've been screwing the past few years, I suggest you take a deep breath and start contributing.
ReplyDeleteWE SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE NON-CONTRIBUTORS IN OUR MIST. GOV. CRIST WILL NOT STAND FOR IT. WE HAVE TO JUSTIFY OUR EXISTENCE.
Cast-Hell didn't make an attempt at recruiting.
