Rattlers hope to rebound from a challenging year

The Rattler football team who finished 3rd in the MEAC last year have been picked by leauge coaches to finish no higher than 5th this year.

The good news is preseason polls don't really count for a whole lot.

Head football coach Rubin Carter told MEAC coaches and the press yesterday that he's rebuilding the total program. "We're doing it with infrastructure first. It starts with developing the right attitude and mental toughness. Those things are critical for us," Carter said.

The Rattlers have had back-to-back winning seasons under Carter's leadership, including a 7-4 finish last season, which included five wins by a touchdown or less and two in overtime.

"If you look back at last season, it was no cakewalk to end up where we did," Carter said. "We had to win games in the fourth quarter to be successful."

After giving up more than 250 yards rushing per game in 2006, Carter and his staff went and loaded up on defensive linemen.

"We have to be able to stop the potent offenses that we have in the conference," Carter said. "When you look at the teams above us - Hampton, Delaware State, South Carolina State and Bethune - they all have unique and different offenses. That is one thing about our conference. We play a different type of opponent each week."

"What we have to do is play good, solid and sound defense, but it starts with good players. We think the group of freshmen we recruited fit well into our scheme."

Carter inherited a program that was placed on probation two years ago by the NCAA for committing more than 200 minor violations and in the process was stripped of 36 football scholarships.

  3. Since you are putting information out there, at least put the correct information out. The program Carter inherited did not commit 200 violations, but instead the athletic department as a whole committed over 200 violations. The football program did not commit all 200 violations. Get your facts straight before you post them.

  5. Coach Carter is a nice guy, but he doesn't have that killer instinct to win games.
