Grambling coach Rod Broadway has turned us down, and it appears that new FAMU Pres. James Ammons needs some help selecting our next head football coach. Crunch time is upon us, its time for the Rattler Nation to step up and offer the president some guidance.
It looks like Rubin Carter is a finalist for the coaching position at Savannah State University.

Savannah State University has trimmed its list of 68 applicants for the vacant position of football head coach to four finalists, the Savannah Morning News learned Thursday.
Interviews with a number of people who work at SSU confirmed that the following people were seen on campus Thursday: Raymond Gross, Robby Wells, Rubin Carter and Kent Schoolfield.
The four were invited to SSU by vice president for administration Claud Flythe to continue the interview process. Flythe will announce the hiring of SSU's head coach at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tiger Arena before the start of the men's basketball game against High Point. SSU's women will play host to Alabama State at noon. Flythe said the new coach will be introduced to Tigers fans between games.
"I can't confirm or deny that they are the four finalists because I didn't get a chance to ask all of the finalists if I could reveal their name to the newspaper," Flythe said.
The position was advertised from Dec. 1-14. SSU is looking for its ninth football head coach in 13 years. Theo Lemon and his eight assistants were fired Nov. 30 after compiling a 3-18 record in three seasons.
Flythe said 10 finalists were chosen by a search committee that included boosters, members of the Athletic Foundation and the National Alumni Association, former and current football players, administrators, staff and people in the community.
Flythe said the list of 10 finalists was narrowed to four finalists.
He said he initially planned to invite three finalists to campus to be interviewed by the search committee and to meet with school president Earl Yarbrough.
"It was so close (Wednesday) in our deliberation we couldn't get it down to three," Flythe said. "So, we brought four people on campus (Thursday)."
SSU's new coach and his staff will have to work quickly to identify and recruit prospective players before National Signing Day on Feb. 6.
Gross, who was inducted into the GSU Athletic Hall of Fame, served for three years at Bethune-Cookman as the quarterbacks coach until 2002. He was an assistant for three seasons at Clark Atlanta University before returning to B-CU. Gross helped coach B-CU to a 45-13 victory over SSU this season and a 55-6 victory over the Tigers in 2006.
"It's an excellent opportunity," Gross said of the SSU job. "I am excited about the possibility."

As posted in today's Tallahassee Democrat, Dr. John Eason is coming in for an interview. Hopefully, this is not just a favor to Dr. Ammons (much as Dewayne Dixon did for Billy Joe three years ago) to raise the level of applicants. Here is why these would be a good hire for us and for Coach Eason:
ReplyDelete1. He is one of the best recruiters in Division 1A football.
2. Many know that he was the master mind behind the spread office that Charlie Ward ran at FSU. That is why he went to The University of South Carolina to serve as Offensive Coordinator under Brad Scott.
3. He will be able to assemble a great coaching staff, mixed with a crop of young up and coming coaches, and wily veterans. The one thing that our team will be is coached at every position.
4. He will also provide excellent insight to the expansion of Bragg Stadium.
If he takes this job it is because of his love for FAMU, and wanting to put his stamp on his University. As the Associate Head Coach at UGA, he has to be making around $500,000 to $600,000; the most that we would be able to offer is $300,000 (and that is way top end). At this point, let’s just wait and see. But for those who are unsure about Eason, this is why I think that he would be a great choice for us right now.

ReplyDeleteNAME POSITION 2006-07 Jan. 1, 2008UGA Athletic Association salaries
Story updated at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2007
During its yearly executive board meeting May 10 in St. Simons Island, the University of Georgia Athletic Association released its salary figures for the remainder of this fiscal year and the one that ends on June 30, 2008. Below are the salaries of the general administration portion of Georgia’s athletic department and the athletic programs it guides. State employee payroll information is public information, and can be obtained under the protection of the Freedom of Information Act.
Mark Richt Head coach $278,100 $278,100
Tony Ball Assistant $143,000 $147,290
Mike Bobo Assistant $143,000 $220,000
John Eason Assistant $170,500 $175,615
Jon Fabris Assistant $170,000 $175,100
Rodney Garner Assistant $191,000 $196,730
John Jancek Assistant $137,500 $141,625
Dave Johnson Assistant $143,000 $147,290
Willie Martinez Assistant $200,000 $220,000
Stacy Searles Assistant $220,000 $226,600
Barry Every Program coord. $49,931 $51,429
Keith Gray Asst. strength $42,531 $43,807
Steve Greer Admin. spec. $72,842 $75,027
Harold Lamb Program coord. $19,715 $20,306
Joe Tereshinski Video coordinator $90,315 $93,025
Dave Van Halanger Dir. strength and cond. $148,500 $152,955
Clay Walker Asst. strength $30,879 $31,805
The first set of number represent what they make now and the second is what they will make in 2008. So if we were to give hime 300,000 more than the Provost and Dean of the Law School we will be going backwards! His pay should reflect his ability to win( and not just the MEAC!), graduate students within six years( 70% or higher)ability to raise external funds for the university
ReplyDeleteHeck, i refused to believe that the UGA head coach makes mere $278,000.
ReplyDeleteBut if these salary figures are to believed, i'd just like to make what the video coordinator makes.
Can't dispute the facts. Good job, 11:58!
ReplyDeletethank you 12:12 and I agree with you 12:11 I wish someone could give me a video cam as well to make 90,000+
ReplyDeleteGeorgia is a state U so thats what Richt gets fromn state money. The boosters probably pay more and also give him performance bonuses. Eason would be the best choice but in my opinion Rattler football has suffered due to the disgraceful way they ousted Coach Billy Joe. Hopefully we can get Eason and he can turn things around.
ReplyDeletepoint well taken
ReplyDeleteKent Schoolfield? OMG! Is he still working, even? He's an old holdhover from the Ken Riley days, and he's been
ReplyDeletee-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e.
i thnk 9:26's salary statement was a general guess. now that we know what his salary will be in '08, i think Ammons can pretty much match that, no problem. it's not much different than what they were offering Broadway. let's just hope the man wants to come.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the salaries posted by 11:53a.m. are what the coaches are being paid by the State of Georgia. The UGA booster are also paying these individuals coaches a handsome amount of money. Don't think for a second that Ritch and staff are makeing the same amount as major Division 1AA school are paying there coach. If that were the case, it would be much eaiser to hire well qualified coaches.
ReplyDeleteYeah DB Rattler is right, the state salary for Richt is just the tip of the Ice-Berg. Heck, Mr. Robert Bowden is listed as an "Assistant In" (faculty line) as far as state payroll, and only made $189K in the 2005-2006 fiscal year (source United Faculty of Florida Web Site), so don't look at 11:53's posted data as being finite.
ReplyDeleteDidnt Dr. Ammons just fire a "career assistant" with NO head coaching experience? It seems that the more things change, the more things stay the same. And would be the case with hiring Eason. For once let's try going after current head coaches who are proven in winning games, conferences, and in the playoffs. Regardless of division, college affiliation, and even race. Please think OUT the box, Dr. Ammons and Hayes, because the latest developments (Broadway, search committee waiver, Eason) are reminiscent of the old regime that was recently and thankfully booted. Has the head coach at Valdosta State (right up the street) been sent a memo of interest? That's the kind of OUT the box thinking I'm referring to. Talk about winning WITH less (conference, playoffs, and 2 D2 championships in 4 yrs). I believe his name is Dean.
ReplyDeleteIf the guy at VSU IS interested in the HC position, let him contact President Ammons.
ReplyDeleteIf the guy at VSU IS interested in the HC position, let him contact President Ammons.
ReplyDeleteWhy? Did Broadway and Eason initiate contact with Dr. Ammons?
GIVE ME A BREAK IF THE COACH FROM VSU BECAME THE HC AT FAMU I WOULD NEVER SET FOOT ON THAT CAMPUS AGAIN!!!! HERE WE GO AGAIN WTF!
ReplyDelete^^^You probably dont contribute a cent to FAMU athletics anyway. So trust me when I say that you will NOT be missed. While you're at it, take the rest of those RINOs with you too!
ReplyDeleteLMAO @1:11pm
ReplyDeleteAn open appeal to Dr. Ammons!
ReplyDeleteBilly Joe has not signed with Miles College yet. FAMU did not handle him right. You know it and the entire Rattler Nation knows it. We need to do right by him. Quit listening to the haters, follow your first mind and hurry up and sign him. He's a man of his word and once he signs we have no chance of correcting the wrong we did to him. There will be some haters if you bring him back, but once we're winning again, like we used to, before the Corbin Clan destroyed his program, the stadium will be full again and we can all tell them, what we're in essence telling Castell and them now, to go to hell!
Eason saying no changes everything, do the right thing NOW!
If it is true that Billy Joe hasnt signed with Miles, then I'd advocate bringing BJ back on an interim basis only; until we find our permanent coach. BJ being back in the interim would show the 2008 new recruits some athletic program stability, and further assuage their confidence in FAMU's commitment to building and growing a powerhouse FCS football program by not rushing to hire just any ole head coach; taking the time to search for the BEST head coach.
