More than 350 Florida A&M University employees received $272,988 in back wages, after the university reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Labor following a investigation looking into wether or not the school violated federal overtime and record-keeping rules.
The violations occurred between Sept. 4, 2004, and Sept. 2, 2006, government and university officials said. Fred Gainous was president of FAMU in September 2004 and was replaced by Castell Bryant in January of 2005.
"The new administration met with the DOL (Department of Labor) in September 2007," FAMU spokesperson Sharon Saunders said by e-mail. "The problems were inherited by the new administration in July 2007."
FAMU settled the suit in October/early November and most of the employees owed money have received their settlement checks via direct deposit.
Before you start blowing up the blog, much of the time frame mentioned, pre-dates Castell. Overtime was being abused well before she got her arms wrapped around the situation. I know, I still work here.
ReplyDeleteYes, based on the time frame, I would change the title of this particular post. As a department chair, this issue has long plagued our university.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mr. "Department Chair". Changes have been made and the story updated based on the presidential time line as to who was in the top seat at the tim.
ReplyDeleteIt may "pre-date" CVB, but it still includes her interim presidency.
ReplyDeleteOn the bright side, FAMU's College of Pharmacy received full accreditation on Friday for the next six years!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete!!!!!!!HELLO!!!!!!! SOMEBODY!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletePublic universities do experience payroll glitches. It's not uncommon.
ReplyDeleteHowever, FAMU never experienced payroll violations that ranged into hundreds at a time until Castell. Her mismanagement created a payroll-crisis at a level that the university had never experienced under previous administrations.
The problem has been resolved, so let us move on. CVB is HISTORY. We all know what she did and/or did not do. This is 2008. Let us move forward.
ReplyDeletereaching from beyond the grave!
ReplyDeletelike a tales from the crip.
ReplyDeleteis it me or do CVB look like the skeleton from tales from the crippled that popped out the coffin....
ReplyDelete9:44, your eyes do not decieve you. your assessment is correct.
ReplyDeletemy problem with this "blame" game is that everybody plays it.
ReplyDeleteGainous blamed Humphries, Bryant blamed Gainous and Humphries and now Bryant and Gainous are being blame.
The missing blame partner is the oversight board of all of these "Presidents"
Don't worry about who blamed who. Just worry about what the state auditors have said.
ReplyDeleteUp to 2002, FAMU had 24 years of clean financial statement audits.
FAMU never had a qualified audit until 2005.
At the end of 2007, after three consecutive qualified audits, FAMU finally bounced back to receiving an unqualified opinion.
If you simply look at those facts and who was in charge of supervising FAMU at the time, then you find the guilty parties.
Don't let crooked Mr. Townsend leave town, because he is part of that overtime issues in the athletic Department, involving Coretta Ellison. Towsend personal secretary.
ReplyDeleteFamu is making strides to immprove. But I am still very disappointed at things that are allowed to go on. I am a very proud alumni, and I believe there should be a cleaning of house, which has been done to a certain extent in the higher positions, but I mean teachers/faculty as well, there are teachers/faculty that are using very unethical methods, teachers/faculty that are just robbing the bank and not teaching, teachers/faculty that are just chasing A$$,teachers/faculty dating students.. And I know that a little of this goes on everywhere, but I could care less about everywhere else. I believe that if the administration hears these things and finds them to be accurate then action should be taken. But this has not happen, I can name 5 different situations that are currently going on that should not be taking place and those teacher?faculty should be fired on spot. Let's get FAMU back to a reputable University. Throw out the TRASH!
ReplyDelete^^^^^^
ReplyDeleteThrowing out the trash would mean that FAMU is trying to change. Sadly, it is not. As long as FAMU keeps hiring unqualified and incompetent employees at high salaries, why would we want to change. It's just more of the same to me. Yes the morale is up a bit, but that was expected. Now let's see what happens after the honeymoon is over. Now lets see what happens after the university has spent crazy money on everyone coming from North Carolina.
The reality is, FAMU is a great place, but its a great place in spite of all the things that have gone on. I still say FAMU deserves everything that happens to it as long as all the things that are blatently wrong with FAMU are allowed to continue on. All the political hook ups, favors, corruption, etc. So every hustler and con artist I say come on down.....FAMU is ready for you!!!!!!
Shame on you department chair for not doing your part and raising a red flag. It's people like you collecting a paycheck and not making a difference that gives FAMU the bad rap.
ReplyDeleteSHAME ON YOU for knowing and not doing a dag-gum thing about it.
Throw out the trash? FAMU just hired the Reverend Holmes brother to run the DRS. Talk about a hook up! Nothing is changing at FAMU, except for fresh faces with the same set of sticky fingers.
ReplyDeleteI think the Reverend out to "stick" to his church and stop meddling in FAMU's business.

1/14/2008 5:35 PM
For the record, 1/14/2008 5:35 PM, when I became department chair, I cleaned up my process. Unfortunately, I can only do my part at my level, but thanks for your concern.
