With farmers searching for ways to cope with high energy cost, some are successfully making their own fuel from vegetable oil and oilseed crops.

FAMU's Small Farm Program is partnering with Piedmont Biofuels, the National Center for Appropriate Technology, and the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association to present two workshops in February to explain the basics of biodiesel production.

The workshop for beginners is Feb. 10th at Barnhart Farms off U.S. 90 East on Barnhart Road in Monticello from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The advanced workshop will be held on Feb. 9 at Crescent Moon Farm, 145 Crescent Moon Trail in Sopchoppy, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Crescent Moon Farm installed a biodiesel processor, in 2006, and the farm staff learned the technique for producing a fuel the farm uses to power tractors and other equipment.

The main objective of the workshops is to demystify biodiesel production.

  2. lol...here, here 9:41am; i agree with you on that. it's great to hear FAMU's involvement in this type of innovation. i just wish the US would encourage more research and development in this arena. but, that hard to do against the powerful oil lobby.

again...great job FAMU! maybe you can hand out gallons of this stuff for our cars...like you do those grapes...lol
