Patricia Walker McGill the former director of FAMU's Institute on Urban Policy and Commerce was indicted on federal theft and fraud charges yesterday, along with the former director of literacy programs in Franklin County.

McGill, 60, was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit theft from federal programs and mail fraud, seven counts of theft from federal programs relating to educational grants and 13 counts of mail fraud, according to a statement by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Florida. Bonnie Segree, 68, of Eastpoint, was charged with eight counts, the statement said.

The indictment alleges the pair "stole, embezzled, misapplied, or converted to their own use and to the use of others not entitled thereto, funds provided by the United States Department of Education through the Florida Department of Education for educational literacy grants."

It also says McGill "required certain educational grant recipients to kick back portions of the grant monies to the defendants and disguise the monies paid to the defendants as ‘consulting' fees for the grants and would require the recipients to falsely report that the grant monies were earned for work related to the grants."

McGill faces up to 350 years in prison and $5.25-million in fines. Segree faces up to 140 years in prison and $2 million in fines. Both were arrested this morning and will be scheduled for trial in Panama City before U.S. District Judge Richard Smoak.

Former interim FAMU President Castell Bryant fired McGill in May 2005, saying the decision was based on findings from a payroll audit. Today's statement from the U.S. attorney's office says the investigation began two years ago.

I would have paid a fortune to hear what her convo was like with Cast-hell, when she was let go. I'm sure it was a profanity laden shouting match.

  7. I think that if McGill goes to jail the FBI needs to investigate the CVB administration and I am sure the will find reasons to bring her up on charges as well. Hell, just give the bonus back CVB.

    ReplyDelete
  8. CVB, as you call her, is history. Why don't you let her remain there?

  9. Children children children. An indictment does not mean guilt. If you were to study the legal system you would know that. So stop in the name of all that is sane and wait until the end game.
Stop assuming that the fed case is rigthteous gospel-remember that this US Attorney Office represent George W Bush and how anyone could believe anyone who works for that baboon is one him/herself.
MCGILL IS THE FALL GAL IN THIS ONE. KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE YOU TRY TO BE JUDGE AND JURY. JC.

  10. If Bryant knew what she was doing when she got rid of this person- how come she asked several employees to "plant" files in the institutions records. CVB made McGill out as the fall guy.
The feds should get Cast-hell for wasting tax payer dollars with this fake ghetto half azz investigation that they claim they did. WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE AND SMELL THE CONSPIRACY.

  11. AMEN PREACH---Did anyone know that McGill had multimillion dollar lawsuit against the school. It's awfully strange that they pulled this one out of their a***. And they lied to the feds no doubt. Y'all need to prayer for McGill and not crucify her. I don't partiuclarly care for her ways but she don't deserve this.....AT ALL.

  12. uh read that indictment again--It is alleged that she did some stuff with some programs away from the school. this had nothin at all to due with FAM. Why is that even newsworthy to put on this site if what she (McGill) supposedly did had nada to do with FAMU?
If Castell fired her - for doing something at the school I could see that-but again --breakin it down if it don't fit the jury will acquit.

I have worked with Dr. McGill for years and she is a God fearing and hardworking christian woman. She has simply been caught up in a bunch of Negro crabs in a bucket.
In the end, I am sure that there will be quite a few apologies made by the negro lawyers at famU AND ALL THE HATERS-cause god don't like ugly.
I predict Dr. Mcgill and Mrs. Segree 21 and the US District Attorneys Office zero for dealing with and believeing in lying negroes.

  14. Castell fired Dr. McGill for calling her a "lame duck muther fuker!" Ofcourse, Dr. McGill was correct, but Castell didn't want to hear that.

  20. Unbelievable!

For those of you who honestly think that Castell Bryant was "right" for firing Dr. McGill, tell me this... If it was McGill that was up to no good, then why did Castell fire every single person in the Institute and not just McGill? What is the justification? Additionally, it is reported that McGill was employed at the University for 17 years. Does the Rattler community honestly believe that this woman fraudulently received monies for 2 of those 17 years? Under the guidance of one of the most prestigious presidents in HBCU history no less? Give me a break! Castell Bryant felt she had something to prove to the people who negligently put her in an undeserving TEMPORARY position of "power." She had to produce results by any means necessary no matter who she stepped on in the process. This is precisely why she is no longer at the University. In fact, she was essentially fired from her post due to negligence and incompetence! And who is paying the price? The faculty, staff, alumni, and students! The community that has always supported the University. There is no trust, enrollment is declining, and dollars are flying out the door. Bryant and her administration created nothing but an environment of dissent in their wake. So much for "others" driving a wedge between US. We do it to ourselves.

It's a very sad state of affairs is all I can say. I will say this... I can only hope and pray that none of you people who have tried and convicted these women (McGill and Segree) ever have anyone ever falsely accuse you of anything in your life. But then again... They talked about Jesus, right?

  21. 8:13, you know some crackheads & criminals?? the language you've used says quite a bit about what you might be as well. Good grief, you sure know how to make a point about someone running a "ghetto, negro-rigged, half-a**, wanna-be blog." Dang. If we weren't feeling the article, we sure as heck are feeling it now.

  22. Goodness! What does one person's comment have to do with the integrity or validity of the article or case? Lashing out against another person due to an opinion speaks volumes about one's own self value.

I don't know any crackheads or criminals personally, but did you stop to think that probably 50% of people in this messed up word do? Perhaps it's a family member or co-worker. Perhaps the person who posted is a former crackhead or criminal. Or for crying out loud... Perhaps that person is an attorney or law enforcement officer! Perhaps that person knows something about you.

Seriously people... Voice your opinions and blog about the facts of the case/article. But the personal attacks aren't necessary. Nor are they productive. This is what turns so many people off blogs/opinions posted elsewhere like AOL, Yahoo, MSN, etc. People get so wrapped up in negative rhetoric that it all turns to garbage! This is a blog that is quite visible to the world. Since I ASSUME that most of us are somehow attached to the FAMU community, lets show the world that the school is capable of producing positive, contributing members of society that aren't crackheads, criminals, morons, idiots, or (as another poster stated..) "just crabs in a bucket!"

Let's get it together for the sake of all that is good and righteous in the world!!!!

  23. Whatever you might say -or whatever side of this arguement that you are on...posting this McGill woman's pciture is incredibly reckless because it could quite possibly compromise the case of the US Attorney has supposedly made against her. This was a crab in the bucket low blow if there ever was one. Not only is it low down but where was the picture procured? I don't think that it is likely that Dr. McGill gave her picture to author of this blog to be published in this negative light. It is unlawful to publish a picture of someonw without that person's permission. This irresponsible act will not go unanswered and McGill should definitely sue the owner of this blog.
I personally will forward this to the US Attorney's Office in Tallahsee today.

  24. I work in the admnistration at our beloved FAMU and Castell asked several people to plant fake evidence in the Institute's files. I know this for a fact.
You should wonder why it has taken so long to bring this case up. There are many of us here on the FAMU community that support and love Dr. McGill for all the work she has done for her alma mater adn we KNOW that she is NOT GUILTY of anything accept being the fall "guy".
I too will call the US Attorney's Office and tell them about the inappropriate behavior of this blog person.
WE are praying for you Patricia. You might have some haters but many more are praying that the truth comes out and that you will not serve one second in prison and neitehr will Ms. Segree.

Are you serious? Do you have a Doctorate degree in Psychology? Anyone who would belive this crock that you just published....
I think that whoever that person was who expressed that opinion was expressing his or her outrage at the injustice that is occuring to these two women.
Anyone who has been arouond FAMU for more than two seconds -will smell rat.
We understand that everyone makes mistakes but try not to analyze someone else's intentions if you don't know a person and you don't have the credentials to do so.
Publish good reports of people and stop with all the mess.

It seems that you misunderstood my original post. I too was addressing the injustice to these two women. In fact, to rephrase what I stated before... The person who believes that this article is the gospel truth and doesn't question the so-called "facts" is ignorant. I was addressing why the second poster jumped all over the first person for stating that they knew "crackheads and criminals with more integrity." They have implied that this article or so-called case have validity just because someone else made a particular reference. And clearly, one has nothing to do with the other.

It would seem that you and I sir/madam are on the same side of this debate.

  27. There was a point to saying all that...I am sure. Its somewhere hidden in the statement.
And people wonder why HBCUs enrollments are declining. I sure as hell -am not sending my children to FAMU. My family has gone there for three generations and the buck stops here.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No offense, but your illogical rationale for breaking a family tradition is the reason why HBCUs are declining.

    ReplyDelete
  29. There is a reason why black folks are leaving HBCUs. Its because of stupid crap like this whole incident.
We can all argue back and forth about rather they are this or that but the truth be told-unless its Hampton Howard Morehouse or Hampton-I don't think it (the school) will be around in the next fifty years.
What the school did to McGill will come out sooner or later. And BTW you all are wrong as two left shoes for putting her picture on this site when you didn't do that on the first day you put her indictment on this site. What's up with that man? Oh that's right you all went or are either attending FAMU and that's what ignorant folks do. I guess the administration's stuff has finally rolled down hill and into the brains of the students..who couldn't get into a fully accredited school.

  30. You really don't have to have anything to do with HBCU's. Interesting how non-nurturers can't let being unsupportive be enough. They, if black or threatened, must help destroy in whatever way possible. Please leave this site?

Your bad grammar is proof positive that HBCUs are really in trouble. I'll be damned if you didn't prove my point exactly! your grammar ans syntax is horrible.
Another failure of HBCUs is trying to make hood rats into intellectuals and that just ain't happening. Transfer to a majority school, please. Close FAMU. We see what it produces.
