Overpaid staffers told to reimburse FAMU

Rattler Nation has learned that sixty-six FAMU staffers who were overpaid because of a glitch in the university's January 18 pay period have been told they must pay the money back. The glitch we're told was likely a human error.

FAMU recently sent the 66 employees certified letters informing them they must repay the overpayments.

The overpayments ranged from $3.25 to as much as $4,543 and totaled $67,558. The overpayments were mostly received by faculty members and graduate assistants.

"We haven't had any major problems since the Jan. 18 payroll," said FAMU chief financial officer Teresa Hardee.

That one January payroll caused employees to be overpaid and underpaid. FAMU administrators completed paying back employees who were underpaid. Now, those who were overpaid are required to pay university, she said.

“We’re reasonable,” Hardee said. “We’ve given them until April 4 to work it out.”

FAMU began processing its own payroll on January 1.

Several of the overpaid employees have been resistant to the idea or returning the overpayment, and feel that they are entitled to keep the money. "It's their (FAMU's) mistake and I should haven't have to pay it back," said one employee who received an overpayment. "Finders keepers, losers weepers!"

  1. Any staff member who does not agree to pay the money back should be FIRED ON THE SPOT!!The qoute from the employee who said finder keepers...is an idiot and an example of the low class people who are employed at the university and need to be fired anyway!

  2. Them staffers knew it wasn't their money to keep, they need their asses kicked. Big ups to FAMU for catching their mistake and making a move to get their money back.

  3. HA im a student and im laughing at this....here's a solution. Why don't we get that $80,000 bonus that the incompetent Rev. R.B. Holmes and his inept board members awarded Cast"HELL" last year...sounds like they are doing you all like the finanical aid office does us

  4. "finders keepers, losers weepers"??? Huh??? First of all, no one "found" anything. It was "there" to be seen. Secondly, why in the world would you want to keep money that you know good and darn well does not belong to you? Third, the idiot person who alledgedly maid the comment would probably be the first one to chastise a student if a student did the same thing. As I recall, that senario happened during a previous administration and administrators required the students to pay the (financial aid) money back. Same thing. And the only right thing to do. I hope the over-paid folks didn't go out spending what they knew didn't belong to them in the first place. What did they think they were getting? A surprise bonus for jobs well done?

  7. If these same people were underpaid, they'd be doing the same thing FAMU is doing now.

I also think that some of these same people are quick to criticize and lash out at the university's leaders for the problems we face. Those same people are probably part of the problems they complain about because of the type of attitude exemplified in this story.

Refusing the return the money only contributes to the problems. Be part of the solution and give the money back.

  8. Kudos to FAMU for catching the problem as quick as it did. If the bank makes a mistake like this and puts too much money in your account...it definately ain't no finders keepers losers weepers with them. Respect FAMU and give the money back or face termination. Some of these folks have no morals. The money belongs to FAMU not you.

  9. FAMU simply ought to deduct the difference from their next paycheck and be done with it. Mistakes happen, but I am proud that they caught it so quickly and moved by sending CERTIFIED LETTERS unlike the old administration word of mouth way of handling an issue like this.

  11. Having had this happen with my employer, they very discreetly sent letters to those who were overpaid indicating that a % would be deducted out of their coming checks however if they wished a different arraingment (ie paying back all at once) it would be accepted

  12. What does it profit a man or woman to gain $4,543 and lose his or her job? Pay back the money and quit crying.

  13. 10:53 great point most students and black folk in general are afraid to speak against anybody who puts "pastor", "Reverand", "Bishop", etc. in front of their names! Rev. Holmes can raise Tens of millions of dollars for Bethel Baptist to buy up everything and called hiself raising 1million dollars to cover a 3million dollar debit in Famu Athletics two yrs ago. and did not raise it all and we have heard nothing else about it! FRAUD!
