As we noted yesterday, FAMU ranked fourth in educating black bachelor’s degree recipients who go on to earn Ph.Ds in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). In recognition of that accomplishment, this week’s Rattler Nation will carry three additional stories focusing on FAMU’s road toward a higher spot on that list.
Tomorrow, we’ll tackle criticisms from scholars who’ve turned up their noses at the news that HBCUs continue to outpace predominantly white institutions in preparing blacks for STEM doctoral studies.
Then, on Thursday, we’ll look at President James Ammons’ plans to increase FAMU’s presence in STEM education.
Finally, Friday’s Rattler Nation will provide commentary about how the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering fits into this equation.

I am a graduate of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. FAMU needs to pay more attention to engineering. Our school does not have one majour research centre at the college. Finally, when you attend graduate school at the COE, you are deterred from attending through FAMU, and even if you do go through FAMU which you should, all of the research, award, grants, and acclaim is given to FSU because they hold all the research centres'
ReplyDeleteHas FAMU starting paying the bills out at the school? Bottom line is that outside the FAMU community, the university is seen in a not so positive light. Look at the latest flap with Ammons and Long.

ReplyDeleteWe'll touch on that issue of tomorrow. Please come back and add any personal insights you have from your own experience.
As you can see from 11:57 PM's comment, the crowd that doesn't want FAMU in the E-School partnership will be reading, as well.
Actually FAMU pays more than you think, FAMU even funds FSU research centres'just because the FAMU-FSU COE name is attached, which it should not do. Reform needs to happen at that college from the ground up, on both sides!
