Business is booming for FAMU alum David Marsh. With electricity and gas prices soaring, his alternative energy company is in heavy demand.
He credits his FAMU education for helping him excel in the cutting-edge green industry.
"Back in the 70s I went to FAMU," said Marsh, owner of Tallahassee Energy & Construction (TEC). "They offered a solar energy program there in the 70s."
Marsh specializes in photovoltaic panels, which convert sun rays into electric power, and solar hot water heaters.
One of his highest profile clients is Gov. Charlie Crist, an avid swimmer who purchased a solar pool heater for the Governor’s Mansion. The device will save more Florida taxpayers more than $45,000 over ten years.
Solar water heaters typically cut monthly utility costs by 80 to 90 percent. Marsh even has inverters that redirect excess electricity back to the city plant.
“Solar Man” Marsh’s success underscores FAMU’s early leadership in renewable energy education and will, hopefully, encourage more Rattlers to pursue careers in this lucrative, environmentally-friendly field.
