Atlanta has many crowd-drawing attractions: the Fox Theater, World of Coca-Cola, Six Flags, and…FAMU recruitment fairs. Recently, President James Ammons and university representatives received a TV-celebrity reception from 1,000 area high school students who met them with cheers, claps, and shouts of excitement.
And similar to Bob Barker in the Price is Right, Ammons invited 71 audience members to “come on down” and receive the prizes they’d earned: scholarships to FAMU. The grand total: $1M to high-achieving 12th graders.
“The enthusiastic response we received in Atlanta was awesome,” said Danielle Kennedy-Lamar, associate vice president for student affairs and enrollment management. “Our students, the President, and alumni told our story. Prospective students and parents were convinced that FAMU is definitely the place to be.”
As usual, Atlanta offered a rich pool of young scholars for FAMU to recruit. Among the standing-room-only crowd were 22 National Achievement Semifinalists, seven of which received FAMU’s top award: the Life Gets Better Scholarship. The package covers tuition, fees, room and board, and books for four years. It also includes $500 stipend each semester, internships and a laptop.
These future FAMUans now have a chance to walk in the footsteps many other Atlanta Rattlers who’ve made waves on The Hill in recent years. Current Student Body President Andrew Collins, Miss FAMU Amanda Byrd, and Mr. FAMU Omari Crawford hail from Atlanta.
