The FAMU Department of Social Work will host a town hall meeting to discuss the rising cost of food and what individuals can do to address the issues of food shortage and hunger.
The town hall meeting, which is being organized by the Master of Social Work program, is scheduled for tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jack L. McLean, Jr. Community Center.
Interested individuals will be provided with information on the following: how and why the cost of food is increasing; why there is a shortage of food supplies at food banks; how families can afford the price of food; how to stretch your grocery budget; and where to find additional help in the community.
According the U.S. Census Bureau Survey in 2000, 10.5 percent of all U.S. households representing 20 million adults and three million children were “food insecure” because of a lack of knowledge and access to resources in their communities.
“The objectives of the town hall meeting are to increase the awareness of the significant problem of food shortage and hunger and provide information to mobilize various resources to address the needs of members in the community,” said Merlin R. Langley, chair of FAMU’s Department of Social Work.
The event is free and open to the public. Dinner and door prizes will be provided.
I stayed hungry while at FAMU. Never had much to eat. Thank goodness for big girls.
