OT: Golden Girl Bea Arthur dead at 86

Stage and television legend Beatrice Arthur has died.

"The larger-than-life actress who scored on Broadway as the original matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof and the hard-drinking actress in Mame before she went on to star in the groundbreaking '70s TV series Maude and, in the '80s, the beloved sitcom The Golden Girls, has died. She was 86.

"A spokesman for Arthur's family told the AP that the star had been suffering with cancer, though he did not specify what kind. She died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family by her side."

The tall actress with the deep voice was known for her razor-sharp comedic delivery. Arthur won a Tony Award for "Mame" and a critic lauded her performance as "a portrait in acid of a savagely witty, cynical and serpent-tongued woman."

Just last year fellow Golden Girl Estelle Getty went to be with the Lord.

  2. 7:49, is your foul language really necessary? All you had to do was click, read, and move on -- or NOT click, read, and move on.

NEWS FLASH: The headline says "OT" which means off-topic. That means that the post is not a
FAMU-oriented post. If you want to read additional news about the university, you might want to click on aver to FAMU.edu.

You are certainly a piece of wonderful work.

  4. I trust that those of you complaining (7:49 PM and 9:20 PM) don't read newspapers (or much else) and depend on every source of your news from Rattler Nation.

  6. There are just some people you never just thought would die. Bea Arthur is one of them. She's been a wonderful part of our lives for so long --- Maude and then the Golden Girls. RIP Bea, and thank you for being a friend and making us laugh.

  8. I remember that the show Maude took on some very controversial topics at that time. She performed her role on those topics with such conviction, where we all remember her as Maude. Perhaps the ignorant ones who are griping are not of the generation who can appreciate it, and to display further ignorance, decided to use color remarks to further display their ignorance. I would not call it stupidity, but just ignorance. Go figure

  9. I liked Bea Arthur. She was smart, funny and before her time, really. I know I'm dating myself here, but I remember her when she first appeared on the "Archie Bunker Show" as Edith's aunt. Bea Arrthur was blunt, sassy, and absolutely no-nonsense. She was also not of the Hollywood "beauty" type actress. She was tall (5'9"), heavy-throated, had much attitude, and dressed unconventionally. She talked sh*t with Bunker and kept the bigot in his "place." If I can throw a bit of "color commentary" in here, she was a white sister: full of spunk and fearlessness. When she moved to her own show, "Maude," she continued the feminist role, and went up a few
notches. This she did for six years. "Golden Girls," however, was to tv-land viewers, the creme de la creme. Girlfriend was wise, witty, sassy, and a combo of everything she had been in her two previous tv roles. She shared the screen with the three other golden girls, but she wasn't really a share-the-screen-with-others type of actress. Therefore, when the show closed she went back to her first love: Broadway, which is what she enjoyed most: live performance. Arthur was as irreverent (NOT irrelevant) as she had always had been. She was an activist on and off-stage, but most of all she was a feminist, who didn't even get the Bunker role until she was 50 years old.

I'm afraid that the first poster, 7:49, just doesn't have a clue. All she(?) saw was a headline about the woman's passing at age
    86. I don't know what's sadder: Bea Arthur's passing or the blogger's ignorance of the woman's contribution to performance art.
