Florida State University’s track team could soon get a big gift as a result of FAMU Coach Rey Robinson’s dismissal: a state champion sprinter.
Tony McQuay (left), of Riviera Beach’s Suncoast Community High School, was signed by Robinson. But after the FAMU athletic department forced the head track coach out, it also released McQuay from his scholarship commitment.
McQuay holds the 2A state title in the 400-meter dash. Clemson, the University of Georgia, and Georgia Tech were among the many colleges that wanted him.
But McQuay dreamed of continuing his family's proud Orange and Green tradition. His parents are both FAMU alums. His mother, Linda, sprinted for the Lady Rattlers and his father, Tony Sr., was a drum major for the Marching 100. Tony's sister is currently enrolled on The Hill.
Now, thanks to FAMU Athletic Director Bill Hayes, Tony wants to join FSU’s team, which has expressed strong interest in bringing him aboard.

Yall just dont know! you all who speak probably really dont work in the athletic department especially with messy REY ROBINSON.
Hayes is doing a great job in re-building the athletic deparment to it glory - no matter who's in the AD spot you all are going to knock their chances of ever making the Athletic department what ever it can be!!! you all really dont know "Rey" and his mess.
If you guys love him so much why didnt you all send so much money you wouldnt have room to store it to rebuild and supply him with what ever it was - stop letting "Rey" blow you all up to rally for him and IN REY'S EIGHT YEAR ERA HOW MANY OF HIS STUDENT-ATHLETES GRADUATED OR STAYED LONG ENOUGH TO PUT UP WITH HIS #$#$%^^!!! He was doing good BACK IN THE DAY - his time is up...
"Rey" stop talking about the famu athletic department you so call love you wouldnt be telling everyone the inside twisted BS.
Debra Clark - dont bring her up, she had her spin and her time was up "time for Change"
travis Blue "that's a joke" he's just mad that his extra money stopped with all that equipment and apparel he was selling and giving away at the expense of famu athletics - i know yall gonna miss that...
GOOD JOB HAYES!!! KEEP SMOKING THEM OUT AND R-ESTRUCTURE OUR ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. Bring the Venom Back!!!
What you all are talking about either Rey Wrote them or he told yall about this - see what's to come and support the program with $ and fill the stands when they perform support the athletes and send your money to the track foundation or any sport foundation to help the program grow.... and stop all this noise....
I AM A FAITHFUL ALUM AND $ DONOR... SO I CAN!!! SPEAK.
Dont put these kids business out there - dont pull them into your mess or what has happened to you Rey Robinson.
ReplyDeleteAnd just because you can recruit them DONT MEAN YOU CAN COACH THEM..
I feel the decision wasn't a great decision and it's time to move on.
excuse me it "was" a great decision and its time to move on... you need a full team not just one good kid every 2 - 3 years and dont finish school or running for four years... dont fool people and stop fooling your self....
ReplyDeleteRobinson was not quoted in the Palm Beach Post article linked to the story. This news came from McQuay himself when he talked to the press. He said he had chosen FAMU. But after all the mess in the athletic department, he's trying to go to FSU instead.
ReplyDeleteThe article stated: coach Carnell Coleman said he wanted to get McQuay to Florida State, but they had already signed some quarter-milers from overseas so he wasn’t sure where McQuay would fit in.
ReplyDelete*********************************
But if he had already signed with FAMU prior to the firing - he was not release to speak with any coach from FSU. Hummm....
what's the real story......
"After his performance, McQuay attracted the attention of Florida and Florida State and he said that made him rethink his decision to sign with FAMU but it was too late. All that changed when Robinson was fired late Tuesday.
In talking to coach Carnell Coleman the week of the state meet, he said he wanted to get McQuay to Florida State, but they had already signed some quarter-milers from overseas so he wasn’t sure where McQuay would fit in.
McQuay said today he wasn’t concerned about that yet. He just wanted to get everything to get settled with Florida State first."
I believe this Mcquay should reconsider FAMU and be the best that he already is.... in Orange and Green...
wait a minute this is about Coach Rey Robinson - validating himself again... you shouldnt do this this is very LOW!!! grow up coach rey and stop this.
The article said McQuay was released from his FAMU commitment.
ReplyDelete11:13,
ReplyDeleteNo we don't work in the athletic department. And from your post your ignorant ass probably shouldn't be either. You systematic (look it up) of all that is wrong with the athletic department.
Since you choose to put everyone's business on blast, lets talk about all the lawsuits brought about as a result of THIS A.D.???
If you don't want folks talking about the A.D and Athletic Department then tell them to stop doing stupid sh#$. And I mean about stupid Sh#% I mean all the over paid personnel and being irresponsible with the money. Give the fans something they want to see and pay for (meaning that basketball team has a new building we better start seeing them improve). At the end of the day the A.D. has to start earning his worth and seeing the Athletic Department in the red every year not going to cut it. In this business either produce or get cut that the nature of the beast.
ReplyDeleteSo what is Dr. Ammons waiting on to get rid of Billy !?!
ReplyDeleteRey's teams only went down when his support went down. don't fool
ReplyDeleteyourself it takes more than hardwork to coach todays young athletes. They want to have the best tracks, the best travel, and
best equipment.IF not they wouldn't
be at FSU.
To end all rumors..McQuay was not released from his athletic scholarship..it is still honored and he is not attending FSU...he is exploring all his offers and opprotunities..and he will forever be a Rattler at Heart for his Family are Rattlers it is in his blood...please don't believe everything you read in the press.. thanks... :))
ReplyDeleteIf this young man wants t run 45 seconds or better this year he will stay at FAMU, I can get this kid to really role.
