Covington, Ga. student Toni-Jhay Tucker is excited about her college choice: Florida A&M University. She selected FAMU over Columbia University, an Ivy League institution that also offered her a large financial aid package.

The National Achievement Scholarship semifinalist received $860,790 in offers from a long list of universities that also included: Mississippi State University, Agnes Scott College, Presbyterian College, Macalester University, Washington University in St. Louis, Texas A&M University, Auburn University, and Liberty University.

Tucker’s FAMU scholarship is worth more than $100,000. Her principal, Roderick Sams of Newton High School, applauded her for “demonstrating the academic excellence we expect of our students.”

  1. Congratulations to the young lady! We should all work to make sure that a decision to attend FAMU is a great decision for young scholars!

  2. She should write the president and ask him to give back the bonus to boost staff and teacher morale so that she can have a FAMU to attend

  3. Hmmm if she only knew...Now I love FAMU but seriously Columbia vs. FAMU idk especially since according to 90.5 the only reason most people attend FAMU was because they were accepted and or instate tuition or they received the most scholorship money which counts for nothing when you never receive the money on time

  4. I hardly think 90.5 is a credible source. Either that you must have been drinking and listening.

FAMU could hardly provide scholarships to everyone. And, our in-state tuition is in-line with other Florida public schools, and the majority of FAMU students had other choices.

As for staff and teacher morale, if they've got options they can haul ass!!! That's what I thought. They don't.

  5. Congratulations to this young lady. My son was also recruited by Columbia & FAMU. He is now a Proud Graduate (both Undergraduate & Graduate) of FAMU and would do it all over again if he had to.

  6. I disagree with you. As a Presidential Scholar from out of state that was also accepted into Ivy League programs and received other scholarships, FAMU was a great decision for me! Also, this may sound as a surprise, but I received my scholarship money on time! I attended the school because of its rich history and the opportunities it could afford me; today as a proud graduate, I know that the reason I am where I am today is because of FAMU...so no, my decision to attend was not simply "because they were accepted and or instate tuition or they received the most scholorship (scholarship) money which counts for nothign when you never receive the money on time".--Proud 2004 FAMU Chemical Engineering Graduate

  7. This young lady can still go to Columbia for graduate school. She'll be ready because FAMU is the #1 best public university in producing blacks who earn Ph.D.s.

    Go Rattlers!

  12. 2:51 PM, people should do that in life period, not just FAMU.

I'm confident that FAMU will be a marvelous experience for this young lady. We're happy to have her join the Rattler Family.

  13. @2:51

I tell them to use their cell phones take pictures, video, and voice record. I'm dealing with a situation now where I need someone at FAMU to correct something but their voice mail has been filled for months and they NEVER answer the phone. Why must it be like this...

  14. 3"03, Yes, they should, but don't always do. Just a tip. No need to get snippy. It's a small thing. Good grief.

  15. Listen up, People:

Just let the young lady come to FAMU. All these other soon-to-be-ugly and snide remarks aren't necessary. Hello? Just let the poor child come. And SExperience For Herself, whatever those experiences may be: Good, Bad, or Ugly. Just let the woman's child get off the plane before we start attacking her. Y'all just old, miserable coots, looking for something to complain about on a Friday. That girl is young and vibrant, and she's not thinking about all of this junk that y'all tryin' to stir up in here. Can she just purchase her ticket first, please

  16. Congratulations Baby Rattler !!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. David just ignore the haters. They are probably the small minority of employees at FAMU who don't have degrees and no other career options....

I'm sure you're very successful like many other FAMU graduates !!

  18. Wow, from little bowrettes in elementary school to this. From what I know from her, this was a major decision and was seen as the best for her. I love her and will be rooting her on every step of the way.
