Roland Gaines, VP of Student Affairs, confirmed, this evening, his intention to retire from FAMU effective June 30, 2010.

Gaines told Rattler Nation, in an email, that after "42 years in higher education, he thinks it is time for some 'me time'". Gaines has spent 36 of his 42 years working at FAMU.

"I started working in the registrar's office right out of high school that summer-even before I started going to school," he said. Gaines, a FAMU grad, continued to work there as a student, and after graduating, got a full-time position in the office. He said there until he was promoted to associate vice president of student affairs in 1997.

He worked closely with current President James Ammons, who was the university's provost, and then-President Fred Humphries. This association led Ammons to take Gaines with him to NCCU in 2001 when Ammons became chancellor.

Since coming back to FAMU, Gaines is credited with restarting the student recruitment program and increasing the number of National Achievement and Scholars enrolled at the university. He also increased the number of community college transfers coming to FAMU.

Gaines said, "Ammons took me away from retirement twice. I tried to retire from FAMU in 2001 and again in 2006 from NCCU.

  2. Don't let the smile fool you, he is as ruthless as the smile. I have seen him in action and I am very disappointed in Dr. Ammons that he allowed him to stay as long as he has. He has a heart for his survival, not the University's.

May God bless you on your new journey and remember he will repay.

  6. When I read the blog, I realized that the truth will be disclosed soon. For the students who have travelled with Mr. Gaines, I guess you would feel that way, however he is not the person he protrays to be.

As far as employees "doing their jobs" make no mistake this is the one area on campus that has always done their jobs. Also the least paid.

  7. Mr. Gaines is a good man and has been a great asset for FAMU. He is a hard working serious administrator that has zero tolerance for lazy MFs that want a pay check for not working. Mr. Gaines will be missed and I'm greatful that I had the opportunity to know him as a FAMU employee the first & second time around. He was a wonderful recruiter and will be missed.

  9. It is unfortunante that we cannot conduct ourselves as mature and intelligent people that must use profanity in order to make a point. I hope you are not connected to FAMU. Everyone has a right to their opinion. I personally feel that it is time for him to step down. No one is perfect and he has made mistakes that have caused people heartaches. As an alumnus and thus stakeholder in FAMU only GOD can repay.

I wish you well Mr. Gaines.

  10. That's what I'm saying @9:54am. I'm shocked. Drop some details if you can. I don't like patriotism at my beloved alma mater.....

  11. Some are some basic facts:

In Student Affiars, there are no earned Pd.D's on the leadeship team, so no studies of student theories or its applied pratices. Now, would SBI or COP have the same standard?

SA lacked a vision for program development because the VP was three times retired. No ideas froma man who has already "checked out".

Student Activites, the source of numerous justifed complaints, is being ran the ground due by adults and student because of lack of qualifed staff and programs. And what happened when the office was being productive? Productive staffers are let go. Student Activities is a dumping ground for bad employees.

Dean/AVP Kirby, with no record of success and being known as a "thug", he is was a poor lawyer placed in SA who runs his areas with tragic results. From SGA to Housing and especially elections. Just look at the results,

In SA, the standards are low and FAMU students should demand more from Student Affairs because they deserve more.

  12. Who is over Career Center now? The lady that used to be there had a Doctorate in Education, and a background in Student Development. Is she a candidate for VP? Are they at least loking at her for Interim VP?
