FAMU could go tobacco free

If members of the FAMU health council have their way, FAMU could be a tobacco free school. The council introduced the idea after visiting the University of Florida which went tobacco free in June. Cigarettes, snuff and chewing tobacco are no longer allowed on UF grounds.

"Smoking cigarettes and everything it causes cancer and so many other issues and when you do it in public it has the chance to affect the people around you," said Marcus Williams, a FAMU student.

"It shouldn't be allowed on campus because that's something you can do at the house and this is a learning environment so I don't think it should be allowed," said John McMillon, FAMU Student.

While some may say the potential rules might be a drag for smoking students others say everyone's health should be considered.

"I'm sure there are students on campus who have asthma and breathing problems as well so it will be beneficial for all of us," added Shanize Byrd, FAMU student.

While the tobacco free concept is still in the idea stages many Rattlers want to see the move go through quickly so campus doesn't smell like an ash-tray.

  1. Never a leader... This is just for talking points. FAMUs culture has never allowed outright smoking in public. I support this if it focuses on standing in front of buildings but just "on campus" is stupid and quite intrusive. The "dry campus" has us broke. Bragg shouldn't be dry just a little moist. Two per hour and last call half way through the third. Watch the revenue grow! We're not a parochial school. I got one for them to ban-these friggin' dogs and pets on campus. Be a trailbalzer in that respect FAMU(I Love Thee).

  2. From strictly an insurance liability standpoint, there's absolutely no need to offer Alcohol on the Campus.

    Besides ...

It has never stopped anyone from "getting their drank on" - whether at all the Tailgates or in the Stadium - in the past ... "So Why Make It Official?"

  3. Just on the football campus. Everything about our program shall be official, if we're serious here-and I AM! Revenue. And we'd like to invite the sneak around spirit(bogus shirts and sneaking cocktails) away from our BRAND and community. As much as possible, we need everyone on the same program. Walk everyone through the licensing process and help vendors develop in our new ways. We can't let tv culture kill our experience. People will just sit at home and watch what ever is on tv. The beer is just a grown folks thing and make well for a tailgate or game day setting. And the gameday experience needs to be nuanced more.

How does the use of smokeless tobacco negatively affect the health of others?

Why are there rules restricting smoking in your car when it is an enclosed space?

Are you actively creating restrictions to curb obesity and make everyone aware of its equally-threatening and possibly MORE dangerous health effects? Why not? Let's make rules about eating junk food on campus because after all, it's bad for you. Also, it can encourage others to do the same.

    Thanks!
