The Rattler football team (3-4, 3-1 MEAC) dominated the Tigers of Savannah
State University (0-6, 0-4 MEAC), allowing just a single field goal in 60 minutes of play, cruising to a 44-3 victory in Bragg Memorial Stadium before an announced crowd of 12,561 fans.
Eddie Rocker had a career day, gaining 171 yards on 17
carries and one TD.
Naturally, Rattler head coach Joe Taylor was pleased with his teams performance.
“You could tell their bodies were rested and recovered and I
thought we went out and showed a lot of energy and had some fun,” Taylor said. “It’s
our third conference win, which is important for us because as you look around
the conference today there are only two teams left that are unbeaten in
conference play and both of them are on our schedule. Our destiny is still
within our own hands, which is why it was important to go out and play the way
we did.”
Quarterback Damien Fleming led the Rattler offensive attack as he passed for 242 yards, completing 15 passes in 22 attempts with two
TDs. This marked Fleming's 14th
consecutive game with a touchdown pass.
James Owens scored on a 15-yard run to close out the first
quarter at 13-3 following a Chase Varnadore kick. Varnadore added another field
goal in the second quarter, with a 38-yarder.
Brandon Denmark and Devan Roberts led the Rattlers with six
tackles each. Terry Johnson would pick off his third interception of the year.
The win gave Taylor 233 career victories, and tied him at #33 on the list of football coaches with more than 200 victories, with former Southern University Coach Arnett "Ace"Mumford. Taylor is still seven spots behind former Rattler Coach William "Billy" Joe who has 245 career victories.
