A Trey Kellum putback with one second left in the
game helped the Florida A&M Men's Basketball team snap a five game
losing streak to beat Howard University, 46-45, Saturday night at the Al Lawson
Center.
The Rattlers were able to piece together the win without the
team's leading scorer Jamie Adams, who was away on a family emergency.
"I was just happy to get the win," said Head coach Clemon
Johnson. "I kept telling everybody I knew that all we needed was
the ball to bounce our way and we could win some games. Tonight it bounced our
way and Trey was right there to put it back in." Johnson added.
The Rattlers jumped out to a 11-4 lead in the first half, on
a Bradshaw three-pointer with 16:43 on the clock. The pesky Bisons used a
13-2 run to take a 17-13 lead with 8:41 remaining in the first half.
Howard opened the second half with two quick scores to take
a 28-24 lead on back-to-back baskets. The Rattlers tied the contest at 28--28
with 16:57 left in the game, before taking the lead 42-40 on a Jomari Bradshaw
three pointer with 5:40 remaining.
Howard tied the game again 44-44 with 2:02 left in the game,
before moving ahead 45-44 with seven seconds left in the contest on an Alphonso
Leary free throw. But FAMU was able to win at the buzzer with Kellum put
back.
FAMU finished the contest shooting 29.2 percent (14-of-48), while HU shot 38.9 percent (14-of-36). The Bison edged the Rattlers on the boards 34-33. The win gave the Rattlers their 7th win of the season, in 26 attempts, for a record of 7-19 overall and 4-8 in MEAC conference play. The Bison fell to 3-9 in MEAC play and 6-20 on the season.
The Rattler men have won just 17 games against 42 losses under Coach Johnson.
