Young and Roberts, former students of “The Maestro,” set to interview for band directorship

Two former students of the late William P. Foster, who directed the Marching 100 from 1946 to 1998, will be on campus next week to interview for the job their teacher once held. The two men are Sylvester Young and Don P. Roberts.

Sylvester Young earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from FAMU. After leaving FAMU, he completed a master’s degree in music from Bowling Green State University and a Ph.D. in music education from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.

Young directed Ohio University’s Marching 110 from 1990 to 1996.

Don Roberts will interview on earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from FAMU and a master’s degree in music education from Jacksonville State University.

Roberts is currently the instrumental music coordinator for the Dekalb County School System. In that position, he supervises the music programs that serve the more than 15,000 students who play in the county’s K-12 bands and orchestras. He is also the creator and director of “Drumline Live” a traveling concert series that he developed after serving as a consultant for the Twentieth Century Fox movie Drumline (2002).
