FAMU alumnus Kendrick Meek is best known for his long list of achievements as an elected official. He rose quickly as a young political star in the Florida House of Representatives, Florida Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives.

But at yesterday’s FAMU Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation, he told current Rattler students that they don’t need a high-profile position or title to make a difference.

“You don’t have to be elected to lead,” Meek said. “You know what you must do and what you have to do.”

Meek urged FAMU students to take up King’s legacy by finding ways to serve those around them. He shared the deeply personal story of how he, as a freshmen college student who struggled with dyslexia, found many helping hands at the Florida’s only historically black public university.

“This institution wrapped its arms around me as it has wrapped its arms around so many of us,” he said.
