Chelsea Armbrister, a PhD Candidate in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME), was selected as the FAMU Corning Fellow for the 2014-15 academic year.

Chelsea was selected by committee from among the PhD students enrolled at the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering, based on her academic performance, past internship experience and her research proposal for working with Displaced Foam Dispersion (DFD) for overcoming barriers with nano-particulate integration. DFD involves the encapsulation of nano devices within polymer foams.

Her experimental work will focus on developing and modeling of these nano particulate foams for various nano devices as well as determining a consolidation metric for fiber reinforced polymers containing particulate foams. A secondary emphasis will be placed on the multifunctional aspects of Fiber reinforced polymers with nano particulate foams and their large scale applications.

The Corning Endowed Fellowship is targeted toward material science related research, offsetting tuition and providing a stipend to support student research.

Criteria for selecting Corning Incorporated Foundation Fellows include: academic standing, evidence of "careful, adept and creative thinking in his or her work," the ability to produce high-quality research, an active interest in pursuing a career as an industrial scientist, and a commitment to participate in summer internship at the Corning company.
