Agnew held many leadership positions during his days as a business
administration student at FAMU. They included freshman class president,
sophomore class president, student body vice-president, and student body
president. Caterpillar, Procter & Gamble, and Eli Lilly all offered him
positions before he graduated. He ultimately went with Eli Lilly, but eventually
dropped his pharmaceutical sales position with that company to pursue his dream
of working as a full-time civil rights activist like so many of his heroes from
the 1960s.
In his current role as head of the Dream Defenders, Agnew leads a group that promotes a mission of social change through the use of nonviolent civil disobedience and civic engagement. He’s taken a big pay cut but he’s finally doing what he loves.
The Dream Defenders have played a leading role in organizing
protests against Stand Your Ground Laws and police brutality.
