President Elmira Mangum announced that the university’s
annual United Way fundraising drive raised more than $44,400 for the
organization, outpacing last year’s total of $20,875 by 112 percent. The
increase represents a growth in campus participation by 122 percent.
According to United Way of the Big Bend officials, the university’s
efforts represent the largest giving increase among participating
organizations.
“Congratulations to the Rattler community for making our annual United Way campaign a success,” Mangum said. “The success of this campaign is a vivid representation of our unwavering commitment to serving underserved communities.”
Mangum applauded the United Way of the Big Bend for its
invaluable service to North Florida’s citizens and its commitment to making
stronger, safer, and healthier communities.
“Our partnership with the United Way is very special to us,
as it reflects our shared missions to foster healthy and prosperous communities
through providing a quality and affordable education that leads to job
stability and access to proper health care,” Mangum said.
Mangum added that the university community will continue to
participate in additional initiatives, such as the United Way fundraiser, which
coincides with the university’s focus on ensuring upward social and economic
mobility for low-wealth citizens.
FAMU was recently recognized by the Social Mobility Index as
the No. 3 institution in the nation for facilitating economic opportunity for
underserved students.
