Ramsey received his B.S. in physical education
from FAMU, an M.A. in physical education from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D.,
in administration of athletics and physical education from Florida State
University. He then served as faculty member of the FAMU College of Education’s
Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from 1981-1986 and again
from 1997 until his death.
His administrative roles at FAMU included serving as head
coach of the women’s track and field team, chair of his department, assistant
dean of the College of Education, special assistant to the president for
athletics, and interim director of athletics.
President Elmira Mangum said the untimely passing of Ramsey
is a tremendous loss to the FAMU community.
“Joseph Ramsey’s unconditional love for FAMU was shown
through his years of service on behalf of FAMU students and our athletics
programs,” Mangum said. “A person like Ramsey cannot be replaced, and he will
surely be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and
loved ones from FAMU and beyond during this time of mourning.”
