FAMU Sports Information
The Florida A&M Rattlers (0-2) faced a tough 49-10 loss
on the road against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina University (2-0). It
was the second-ever meeting between the two teams. Back in 2014, the
Chanticlears traveled to Tallahassee, capturing a 48-3 victory over the
Rattlers in Bragg Stadium.
FAMU Head Football Coach Alex Wood felt that the Rattlers
just didn’t match up against CCU.
“They’ve got a really good football team and it’s obvious
that we didn’t match up well with them.
We didn’t play well enough to win.
They won and they beat us soundly,” he said.
With 8:33 remaining in the first half, FAMU got on the board
thanks to a 70-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back, Devin
Bowers. He broke off the left side and
scampered into the end zone for the first touchdown of the 2016 season. A
successful kick from Austin Miller decreased the Rattlers’ deficit to 22,
making the score 29-7.
Less than one minute later, Coastal Carolina answered with a
35-yard touchdown reception by junior wide receiver, Bruce Mapp. This would be
the final touchdown of the half with the
score 36-7 going into the break.
Going into the half, Bowers had 120 rushing yards on 12
carries for a 10-yards-per-carry average.
For the Chanticlears, De’Angelo Henderson had 92 yards in the half.
The Chanticlears would score first in the second half on an
eight-yard run from junior running back Henderson, putting them up 42-7.
A bad snap, which resulted in a fumble recovery by freshman
linebacker, Cameron Burton, gave the Rattlers the momentum they needed to get
into the end zone. A connection between senior quarterback, Kenny Coleman and
junior wide receiver, Brandon Norwood would be called back after a tripping
penalty which cost the Rattlers 15 yards and the touchdown.
The Rattlers would end up settling for a 35-yard field goal
from Miller to increase their score to 42-10 with 2:42 remaining in the game.
Penalties and the inability to convert on third-downs played
a part in the Rattlers’ stagnation as they were flagged eight times on the day.
FAMU would conclude the game with a total of 296 of total offensive yards to
439 yards for CCU.
