The Florida A&M Volleyball team (12-11, 7-0 MEAC) came out victorious over the Ospreys of the University North Florida (15-10, 5-3 ASUN) Tuesday evening at the Lawson Center.

The Rattlers won in three sets, sweeping the Ospreys who was the last team they had lost to this season, back on Sept. 20. With scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-21, FAMU looked like a much-improved bunch since the last meeting of the squads..

The Rattlers, playing without star setter, Valeria Lopez, who was unable to play due to an injury, relied on Elena Dimitrova to serve as setter, garnering 28 assists.

“We miss Valeria (Lopez), but Elena was the setter at the beginning of the year; so I wouldn’t say it was a huge adjustment because we’ve been playing with her all along,” said Head Coach Tony Trifonov.

The Rattlers’ defense was key to tonight’s win. Gina Chavez-Lopez thwarted several scoring efforts by the Ospreys by using her height, vertical leap and wingspan to form a wall in front of UNF.  She finished the evening with three key blocks. As a team, the Rattlers totaled five blocks overall.

Nicole Abreu led the Rattlers in kills with 14, followed by Maria Garcia who had 10. Abreu also demonstrated several hard-hitting serves leading to errors by UNF.  The Ospreys had 19 errors in the game, with several of them coming on serves from Abreu

Valentina Carrasco, the Rattler libero,  contributed 16 digs tonight, nearly half of the team’s total of 42.
