The FAMU women’s volleyball team extended their winning
streak to 10 here Sunday, as they held off archrival Bethune-Cookman, 3-1 (25-20,
25-22, 22-25, 25-23) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern
Division match.
The Rattlers won the first two sets, before Bethune-Cookman
edged out FAMU in the third set, becoming the first MEAC opponent to take a set
off FAMU all season.
FAMU (13-11, 8-0 MEAC) was paced by freshman Maria Yvette Garcia, who had 19 kills and 13 digs, followed by freshman Nicole Abreu with 18 kills and 22 digs. Freshman Elena Dimitrova had 49 assists, while sophomore Valentia Carrasco had 22 digs.
Alana Handy led Bethune-Cookman (7-20, 5-3 MEAC) with a match-high 27 kills, with Alondra Bautista leading with 18 digs.
The Rattler women lead the Southern Division at 8-0, with
North Carolina A&T next at 6-1, followed by Bethune-Cookman at 5-3.
FAMU closes its regular season schedule at home this
coming weekend, hosting North Carolina Central (7:00) on Friday, and North
Carolina A&T (3:00).
