The FAMU women’s basketball team let an early scoring advantage slip away en route to a 72-58 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) setback to Howard University at Burr Gymnasium Wednesday evening.

The Rattler women held a 17-16 lead after one period, but fell behind under a 27-11 second quarter Bison scoring surge to trail 43-28 at the half.

FAMU (2-12, 0-1 MEAC) tried to play catch up the remainder of the game, edging the Bison, 30-29 on the scoreboard in the final two quarters, but their 33 percent (11 of 33) floor shooting (2 of 9 from distance) hampered their comeback bid.

Junior Shekerrya Morrison had a near double double with a 13-point, nine rebound effort, followed by Ecenur “E” Yurdakul with 13 points, highlighted by four three-pointers off the bench. Guard Cedricka Sweeting added 10 points for FAMU.

Howard University (5-8, 1-0 MEAC) was led by Erin Blaine with 21 points and nine rebounds, with Te’Shya Heslip turning in a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double night, followed by Sydni Johnson with 12 points and five boards.
