The Florida A&M University Lady Rattlers Basketball team
(6-15) left the floor with a 55-51 victory against the Howard University Bison
(10-10) on Saturday, ending the Bison’s two game winning streak.
The Rattlers struggled early on, fighting to finish against
HU, who they fell to 58-72 in their first conference game in Washington, D.C.on
Jan. 4. Freshman center/forward Ny’Asia Davis led both teams at the end of the
first quarter with six points, one rebound and one block. Junior guard
Kalybriah Haskins also contributed with three points and two rebounds.
The Lady Rattlers did just that. Trailing the Bison by 11
points at the end of the first half, the Lady Rattlers managed to cut that lead
and emerge from the third quarter with one of their own before winning the game
55-51.
Junior center Shalaunda Burney-Robinson led the Lady
Rattlers in points, finishing with 15 points, six rebounds, one block and three
steals.
“I just play the game… There’s so much intensity and I
wanted to win so much that it urges you to, you know… play harder,”
Burney-Robinson said.
“Her teammates are trusting her around the basket and I feel
like she’s one of the best post players in the conference… We definitely trust
her as a coaching staff,” Gibson said about Burney-Robinson.
With a big conference win behind them, Burney-Robinson
credited the win to the cohesiveness that the Lady Rattlers have gained since
their 58-72 loss against the Bison earlier this year.
“When we beat them, it just makes us know that we can
compete and we were the better team today… It just gives us encouragement to
keep working hard,” Junior guard Dawn King, who contributed with three
rebounds, four points and one steal said.
