The FAMU women’s softball team opened the 2017 season Friday morning with a heartbreaking 4-2 loss to the No. 20 University of Kentucky in the first game of the UCF Softball Invitational at the UCF Softball Complex.

FAMU junior designated player Toni Anderson broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh when she belted a solo homer to give the Rattler women a 2-1 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh.

Kentucky’s Alex Martens answered Anderson’s blow, breaking a 2-2 tie with a two-run homer off senior Kenya Pereira in the bottom of the inning for the walk off win.

The Rattler Women took the early lead, 1-0 in the top of fifth, when Pereira reached on an error, advanced to second on a single by Whitney Farris. Pereira was lifted for a pinch runner, Shakayla Nixon, who scored on a Kentucky throwing error.

The Wildcats (1-0) used an RBI single by Katie Reed in the bottom of the fifth to pull even at 1-1.

Pereira (0-1), the Preseason Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, tossed five shutout innings against the SEC member Wildcats, blanking UK until the bottom of the fifth, when they pushed across a run to tie the game at 1-1.

She finished the game with three strikeouts and three walks in six innings, scattering 10 hits, while allowing four runs, all earned in Friday’s opener.

FAMU (0-1) had four hits total, Anderson’s solo homer, Alexis Day’s double, along with singles from Pereira and Farris.
