The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (7-16) clinched yet
another conference win against the Delaware State Hornets (3-21) on Monday in
the Lawson Center with a 69-61 victory.
Despite some difficulties early on, the Lady Rattlers
managed to leave the Hornets to trail for the large majority of the game. By
the end of the first quarter, junior guard Shakerrya Morrison had already
out-rebounded the entire Hornets team with nine.
Senior guard Florence Ouattara also contributed to her team’s first quarter success with 5 points of her own, accompanied by a rebound and an assist.
According to Head Coach LeDawn Gibson, unity was what won
this game for the Lady Rattlers.
“The game got close and to see the young ladies stay
together… Early in the season, I think you all would agree that we would have
saw division,” Gibson said. “I was excited to see the growth that we’ve had
over the last few months.”
The cohesiveness has definitely been paying off, leading the
team to their sixth win against a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) team.
By the end of the game, Ouattara’s statistics surged and she
finished the night with 14 points with three rebounds two assists and three
steals.
Morrison also did her part to contribute to the team’s win,
with a phenomenal rebounding night. Morrison secured 21 rebounds to accompany
her 12 points.
“Every time the ball came off, I wanted to go get it… I made
sure I was the one to go get it,” Morrison said.
She was joined in the winning effort by Victoria Nguyen
finished the night with only one turnover as point guard.
“They really told me that I’ve got to work on being poised
and like, not rushing so much… I just try to look at everything before I do
stuff,” she said.
