The Florida A&M University softball team will open its 2018 home campaign on today with a doubleheader against the Bears of Mercer University. The first game starts at 4 p.m. at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.

As a prelude to the game, FAMU Athletics will unveil a graphic dedicated to the class of 2017.  The graphic features Denise Anderson, Whitney Farris, Amber Fullwood, Tashayla Irvis, Miesha McBride and Kenya Pereira. These six ladies had record-setting careers, helping the Lady Rattlers to four consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships, four consecutive National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament appearances and all graduating together in exactly four years.

The six young ladies were challenged by Head Coach Veronica Wiggins to close out their careers with their fourth title last year. They responded with an improbable MEAC championship, coming from the loser’s bracket to defeat Bethune-Cookman University twice in a row to take home the title.

Wiggins will honor the group for its achievement that has not been matched by any other FAMU softball class.

“This honor is about the young ladies doing what is right on and off the field. They were the model teammates and they accepted the challenge and finished the job. They were the first ones to do it, even though we’ve had some great teams over the years. To top it off, they all graduated in four years,” Wiggins said.
