FAMU's #MeToo blackeye didn't have to happen

FAMU is making headlines again....  And, for all the wrong reasons and for something that didn’t have to happen.

Last Friday, #MeToo founder and activist Tarana Burke abruptly ended a sexual violence forum on campus after getting into a verbal altercation with a university employee.

Burke along with professor Yaba Blay were wrapping up their presentation when Burke and an unnamed employee had words when, according to reports, Burke began to read the tenants of a proposed "code of conduct" she was in talks with the university to adopt.   In essence, the program would have provided FAMU with a $10,000 grant for simply agreeing to adopt the #METoo code of conduct. According to reports, the employee reminded Burke that the university had not yet agreed to adopt her proposal and the exchanged ensued.

To be clear, there’s a lot of murkiness in the published news accounts, and on “FAMU Twitter”…   However, one thing is for sure, this entire situation probably could have been handled a lot differently, and this would not have been a trending story being played out all across the nation.
