Florida A&M University has received over 11,000 applications for admissions for the 2019 Class of Rattlers, a sharp increase over the 7,000 applicants the university received last year, President Larry Robinson told alumni gathered in Birmingham, AL, this past weekend for the FAMU National Alumni Association Convention.  About, 8,500 of these applicants are first time in college applicants.

“Last year, the average grade point average of our freshmen class was 3.4, this year’s class will have an average 3.68 gpa,” he said. “The SAT and ACT scores of our students are also increasing. Of the 11,000 applicants, the university plans to admit only about 1,500 into the freshman class.”

In 2017 the university had received about 5,000 applications for admission around this time, Robinson said.

The increase in applications is a result of the university’s redoubled efforts to increase enrollment.  Last year FAMU had a goal to enroll  10,372 students, but missed the mark by 351.

This year FAMU plans to have a total enrollment of 10,866 students, according to the University's Accountability Plan submitted to the Florida Board of Governors.
