Darryl Brooks, a FAMU senior computer engineering major in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, has been accepted into Google's Tech Exchange program.

Brooks, a Jacksonville native, was selected after a rigorous screening process consisting of interviews and testing.

“We are delighted that Google is including one of our students in their prestigious Tech Exchange program. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for Darryl and an endorsement of our growing computer engineering program” said J. Murray Gibson, Ph.D., dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

After completing the Google courses this spring, Brooks will return to FAMU to finish his senior year. The courses will be used as technical electives toward his engineering degree.

“I am really excited about this program. I love challenges,” Brooks said. “I want to learn how software engineers operate at Google, compared to some of the smaller companies I have interned with.”

In 2018, FAMU partnered with Google in an effort to promote more diversity in the workforce. Five FAMU students participated in the initial offering and the cohort had the opportunity to take courses–such as machine learning and product management— from leading Google engineers.

“I spoke with some of the students who were in the program, last year,” Brooks said. “They said all the courses are very intense...I am hoping to get the opportunity to see how a product is developed, from start to finish."

Google's Tech Exchange program is an initiative that brings students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSI) to Silicon Valley to take courses and learn more about the computer
