Akins comes to FAMU from Alamo Community Colleges in Texas and St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas where he served as Title III director. His career includes director-level positions in workforce development, continuing education and grants management.
“I am extremely excited to add Dr. Akins to our leadership team. The expertise he garnered from serving many years in the role of Title III director, coupled with his extensive experience in the areas of grants management and workforce development, will prove to be valuable assets for FAMU,” said Maurice Edington, Ph.D., provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
“My goal is to improve communication with our stakeholders, consider new initiatives and implement best practices to help support the institution, while also remaining in compliance with our funding sources,” Akins said.
Akins also said he is planning to host forums to ensure the University remains aware of how the funds are able to be applied.
“I want to create an open dialogue to illustrate the positive outcomes of Title III funding,” he said. “The program has a major influence at FAMU, and everyone should be aware of how this program can help enhance the University's initiatives.”
Akins earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Southern University, a Master of Arts in Urban Studies from Trinity University in San Antonio and a Doctor of Philosophy in Human Services from Capella University in Minneapolis.
