With many companies recently making new or increased commitments to a wide range of diversity measures, they must commit to building stronger relationships with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), beyond the usual suspects --- Spelman, Howard, and Morehouse.
There are many other HBCUs like FAMU that provide a largely untapped resource of bright, hungry students.
Businesses looking to innovate in a challenging economy, and diversifying their workforce is not just the right thing to do—it can help to drive bottom line. A diverse workforce brings diversity of thought, and that in turn drives innovation.
Companies must engage with faculty members to share what skills they are looking for and assist in structuring courses to meet those needs. Even something as simple as periodic conversations with faculty members to mutually share any feedback, roadblocks, or advice can go a long way. Real progress in this space is rooted in strong, trust-based relationships.
Corporations must also offer internship opportunities to HBCU students to create a pipeline and help students develop. Creating corporate partnerships with HBCUs creates mutually beneficial opportunities.
