Three FAMU seniors Tazjhani BakerSavannah Clemmons and Cydney Granberry all recent Marianna High School and Chipola College grads have established a scholarship to help students in their local community to further their education at FAMU.

The Cohesive Peoples’ scholarship, as it is called, is starting small at $1,000 to be awarded to one student over two semesters to help with tuition or books, the students said. Baker, Clemmons, and Granberry relied on gifts from their parents, and grandparents, and their families small businesses.  Some other donors are helping it grow, as well, from its original seed.

Clemmons is a senior accounting major, while Grandberry is majoring in public relations and writes for The FAMUan student newspaper, and Baker is studying biology/pre-med.

The idea for the scholarship initiative was birthed after a dinner conversation between roommates Baker and Clemmons who were reflecting about their love and respect for FAMU, along with their hometown, and wondering how they could give back to their local community.  They both knew that Granberry shared their views and made her a part of the discussion.

The three plan to keep spreading the word about their hometown, their experiences here and at FAMU.

“We’re proud of where we came from and I just want to say I’m happy to be part of this thing bigger than me, giving back to my community and I truly want to help someone from here become successful,” Clemmons said.

“A lot of us from MHS start at Chipola, and that’s what we did, and transfer to FAMU,” said Baker. "It’s important to help the schools that helped us get our start and give back to our community.”
