Despite the off field drama leading up to Saturday’s contest, the FAMU Rattler football team put up a valiant effort in its 24 -56 season opening loss to the UNC Tar Heels. The 24 points scored by the Rattlers are believed to be the most ever scored by a FAMU football team against a Power-5 opponent.
FAMU QB Jeremy Moussa completed 28 of 38 passes for 279 yards and two scored. Wide receiver Xavier Smith caught 10 passes for 78 yards. Isaiah Major led the FAMU defense with nine tackles, six of them solo. Jose Romo-Martinez added a 35-yard field goal with 4:29 left in the third quarter for FAMU.
On FAMU’s third offensive drive Moussa lead the Rattlers 75-yards down the field on eight plays, capping it off with a 17-yard pass to A.J. Davis for his first career NCAA touchdown pass. The touchdown was both Davis' and Moussa’s first as a Rattlers.
When the evening was done, the Rattlers had amassed 335 yards of total offense to the Tar Heels 608.
"We're thankful for the opportunity to come to Chapel Hill and play in this football game," said Head Coach Willie Simmons. "Everyone knows what we've endured in the last 48 hours. Just to be here and have these guys compete, I'm really proud of them. I'm extremely proud of how they fought, how they competed, and how they represented what we believe in. I think we answered some questions tonight, and I think we earned some respect tonight from a lot of people."
The Rattlers now turn their attention to SWAC-rival Jackson State as they look to avenge their one-point loss in last year's Orange Blossom Classic.
