FAMU Concert Choir performs in Vienna, Austria

The 41-member FAMU Concert Choir recently traveled to Vienna, Austria for a series of performances at the Historic Melk Abby Church, The Schonbrum Palace, Vienna City Festival and the Vienna Senior Living Facility.

The choir's performances were a part of the International Advent Sings Festival and the Festival Tour of Vienna Sings 2023.  They performed along with choirs from Ireland, Budapest, Romania, Seattle, and New Jersey .

“This is a wonderful and well-deserved opportunity for our student,” said Mark Butler, director of choral activities and associate professor of music in the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (CSSAH). “This is one of the finest musical ensembles on campus, with hard working young people who sing extremely fine repertoire of choral literature that branches so many genres and styles.”

 “Our students represented their University and Country with pride and superior excellence,” said Butler.

“The tour were very educational, and impactful and allowed our students to display their talents on the world stage,” Butler added. “Many of our students literally cried tears of joy and were overwhelmed from having such a beautiful and life changing experience.”  

Established in the 1930s, the FAMU Concert Choir is generally recognized as one of the premier collegiate vocal ensembles in the nation. In 2021, group became the first ever choir to sing the “Lift Every Voice and Sing” , Black National Anthem, live at a nationaly televised National Football League
 game.
