The FAMU women’s track team soared to victory at the 2024 SWAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, clinching an impressive 15 medals and capturing the women's championship title. This triumph marks a significant milestone for the Rattlers, securing their second championship under the guidance of Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Garfield Ellenwood II, who took over the program in January 2023.
The championship is the team's first indoor title in a quarter. FAMU women snagged their last indoor championship win at the 1999 MEAC indoor championship.
Ellenwood's strategic vision and unwavering commitment to excellence have propelled the FAMU women’s track and field program to new heights, inspiring athletes to strive for greatness both on and off the track. Under his leadership, the Rattlers won the SWAC women's cross country title this past fall.
On the men’s side, the rebuild is still a work in progress as the men’s team finished in sixth place in the 11 team field for the second straight year after earning 52 points.
"I couldn't be prouder of our student-athletes," said Ellenwood. "Their hard work, dedication, and teamwork have truly paid off, and this championship win is a testament to their relentless pursuit of success."
Throughout the competition, FAMU's women’s’ team showcased their prowess in a variety of events, from sprints to field events, demonstrating their versatility and depth as a team.
