In a remarkable academic achievement, six FAMU athletic teams have earned a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) score for the 2022-23 academic year. This milestone was highlighted in the annual report released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Furthermore, ten of FAMU's 12 athletic teams have achieved a multiyear APR score exceeding 930 from the 2019-20 to 2022-23 academic years. This marks the fourth consecutive year that at least ten of the Rattlers' teams have maintained this high standard, underscoring the university's commitment to academic excellence among its student-athletes.
A standout improvement was noted in the football team's performance, with their year-over-year APR score soaring by 49 points to 950 for the 2022-23 year. This significant leap reflects the concerted efforts and strategic initiatives implemented by the university's athletic department.
The enhanced academic outcomes can be attributed to FAMU's strategic investment in its athletic compliance staff. The university bolstered its team by hiring six new staff members, led by Brittney Johnson, the senior associate athletic director for Compliance and senior woman administrator (SWA). Under Johnson's leadership, the department introduced several measures, including early pre-certification processes and increased communication with both coaches and student-athletes.
The APR is a critical metric used by the NCAA to track the academic progress, retention, and graduation rates of student-athletes. Scores are calculated annually and over a four-year period, with a perfect score being 1,000. Programs must maintain a minimum multiyear score of 930 to avoid penalties, such as scholarship reductions and postseason bans.

Golf | 1,000

Football | 950
Cross Country | 950
Men's Track & Field | 949

Sanctions and penalties are based on the multiyear APR scores. As such, both the football and men's basketball programs would appear to be out of compliance with NCAA regulations.
